WHAT IS BRUXISM?
Bruxism is the involuntary grinding of the teeth. The teeth are designed to cut (incisors and canines) and to chew (premolars and molars).
Bruxism is the prolonged contact of the surfaces of the teeth.
TYPES, SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES OF BRUXISM
Types of Bruxism
- Clenching the jaw with the mouth closed.
- Grinding, which includes short side-to-side movements whilst grinding.
SYMPTOMS OF BRUXISM
- Muscle tension
CAUSES OF BRUXISM
- Unstable occlusion
- Poor positioning of the teeth that contribute to inadequate contact
TREATMENT OF BRUXISM
The bite plate is a device made of resin that is used at night to treat bruxism. The aim is to position the jaw in a secure and stable three-dimensional position.
By preventing contact between the teeth, the jaw arranges itself into the ideal position and therefore the musculature loses muscle tone, contributing to a more relaxed position.
Tens is an electronic device that uses small electrical charges on both sides of the temporomandibular joint, helping the musculature relax.
The aim is to loosen the muscles of patients who suffer from periods of severe stress.
It produces a very pleasant sensation.
At Cambra Clinic we have a specialist in “Craniosacral Massage”.
All of the body’s muscles are connected to one another, meaning that in the event of tight muscles or pain in the TMJ, sessions of craniosacral massage contribute to returning the muscles of the cranium and the back to their correct tone.
This thereby removes the tight muscles that contribute to bruxism or to other parafunctions of muscular origin.
